Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Boost Immune System & Improve Circulation

Updated: Mar 12, 2023

The Power of Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Detoxify Your Body and Boost Your Immune System

At MaCalm Massage & Spa, we offer a specialized massage technique called Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) that can help improve circulation, detoxify the body, and boost the immune system.

This gentle, manual treatment encourages the natural drainage of lymph, which is a clear fluid that helps remove toxins and waste from the body. By stimulating the lymphatic system, MLD can help to reduce swelling, improve energy levels, and protect the immune system.

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition where there is an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid between tissue layers, causing swelling or edema. It can occur in various parts of the body, such as the legs, arms, face, trunk, abdomen, or genital area, and can have significant consequences for the patient if left untreated. Lymphedema can be caused by blocked lymphatic drainage, leading to the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the superficial tissues.

There are two types of lymphedema. Primary lymphedema is a congenital form of lymphedema caused by a malformation of the lymph vessels or nodes, and may present at birth or later in life. Secondary lymphedema is caused by lymph vessel destruction or lymph node removal due to a disease process or surgery. Common causes of secondary lymphedema include post-surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, infection, blood clots, tumors, or chronic venous insufficiency. Both primary and secondary lymphedema may affect the upper or lower extremity, with the legs more commonly affected in primary lymphedema and the upper extremities more commonly affected in secondary forms.

How can MLD help with lymphedema?

MLD is a specialized massage technique that can help to reduce swelling and fluid accumulation by stimulating the lymphatic system. It involves gentle, rhythmic massage strokes that help to move lymph fluid towards the lymph nodes, where it can be filtered and detoxified. MLD can also help to improve circulation and immune function, and can have a positive effect on skin conditions such as fibrosis, hyperpigmentation, and fatty tissue deposits.

If you are experiencing signs and symptoms of lymphedema, such as a feeling of tightness or heaviness in the affected area, decreased flexibility in the joints, or clothing and jewelry fitting tightly, MLD may be an effective treatment option. Our trained massage therapists can customize the massage to meet your individual needs and help you find relief from lymphedema.

In addition to MLD, we also offer a variety of massage options and enhancements at MaCalm Massage & Spa, including head and scalp massage, aromatherapy, and hot stone massage. Our goal is to provide a personalized approach to massage therapy that helps you achieve optimal health and wellness.

Book your appointment today and experience the benefits of MLD and other massage techniques at MaCalm Massage & Spa.
